Dongfang Shuo

“Cave Continent is in the southwest of the Western Sea. It is three thousand square miles in area. In the north it overlaps Kunlun for two hundred and sixty thousand miles. It lies two hundred and forty thousand miles from the eastern shore of the ocean. On this continent there are many palaces and mansions of perfected immortals and spirit officials. Their number cannot be counted. There are also wondrous lions, scare-evils, chisel-teeth, heaven-deer, and beasts with long fangs, bronze heads, and iron foreheads. The continent features a large mountain formed in the shape of people and birds; hence it is called the “People and Bird Mountain.” On this mountain grow many large trees that resemble maples, but the fragrance of their flowers and leaves may be smelled hundreds of miles away. They are called Soul-Returning Trees. Knock on one and it can actually produce a sound by itself that seems like a herd of cattle bellowing. Those who hear it tremble in their hearts and are startled in their spirits. Yet one can also dig up its root, boil it in a jade cauldron, remove the water, fry the remainder under low heat until it becomes like a black goo, and then shape it into pellets. The product is called Essence-Alarming Incense, but some also call it Spirit-Shaking Pellets, Life-Restoring Incense, Quaking Sandalwood Incense, People-and-Bird Essence, or Death-Dispelling Incense. This single item with six names is a wondrous thing. Its fragrance may be smelled several hundred miles away. The dead in the earth who smell this incense return to life and do not perish again. Perfuming the dead with its even more efficacious…”

“Life Continent is in the northeast of the Eastern Sea. It overlaps Penglai by one hundred and seventy thousand miles. It is two thousand and five hundred square miles in area and lies two hundred and thirty thousand miles from the western shore. On this continent are several tens of thousands of immortal households. Its natural atmosphere is stable and pleasant, so that mushrooms and plants grow continually all year round. Free from extreme cold and heat, the climate here nurtures the myriad beings in utmost peace. There are numerous mountains and streams, with immortal herbs and clusters of mushrooms. The river throughout the entire continent taste like sweet cream. This is by far the best continent.”

“Prime Continent is in the Northern Sea. It is three thousand square miles in area and lies one hundred thousand miles from the southern shore of the ocean. On this continent grow five kinds of sacred mushrooms; there also flows a dark rivulet. The water of the dark rivulet is thick and tastes like honey. Drinking it bestows a life as long as that of heaven and earth. Eating the five kinds of sacred mushrooms also results in long life and no-death.”

"Cueva Continente se encuentra en el suroeste del Mar Occidental. Tiene tres mil millas cuadradas de superficie. En el norte se superpone Kunlun de doscientos sesenta mil millas. Se encuentra a doscientos cuarenta mil millas de la orilla oriental del océano. En este continente hay muchos palacios y mansiones de los inmortales perfeccionados y funcionarios espirituales. Su número no se puede contar. También hay leones maravillosos, de males amedrentadores, -dientes-cincel, ciervos celestiales y animales con colmillos largos y cabezas de bronce, y  frentes de hierro. El continente cuenta con una gran montaña formada con la forma de la gente y las aves; por lo que se llama el "Pueblo y Aves Montaña". En este monte crecen muchos árboles grandes que se asemejan a los arces, pero la fragancia de sus flores y hojas puede ser olida a cientos de millas de distancia.
Se les llama árboles Alma-Devolución. Golpear a uno y en realidad puede producir un sonido por sí mismo que parece como una manada de mugidos del ganado. Los que lo escuchan tiemblan en sus corazones y se asustan en sus espíritus. Sin embargo, también se puede desenterrar su raíz, hervir en un caldero de jade, eliminar el agua, freír el resto bajo fuego lento hasta que se convierte como una sustancia viscosa negra, y luego darle forma en gránulos. El producto se llama incienso-Esencia alarmante, pero algunos también lo llaman Pelotillas Espíritu-Sacudido, Esencia de Vida Restauración de Incienso, Sándalo Temblor de Incienso, Gente-y Pájaro , o Muerte-Incienso-Disipado . Este artículo individual con seis nombres es una cosa maravillosa. Su fragancia puede ser olida a varios cientos de millas de distancia. Los muertos en la tierra que huelen este incienso regresan a la vida y no se pierden de nuevo. Perfumar a los muertos con él es aún más eficaz ... "

"El primer continente es en el Mar del Norte. Está a tres mil millas cuadradas en el área y se encuentra a cien mil millas de la orilla sur del océano. En este continente crecen cinco tipos de hongos sagrados; también fluye un arroyo oscuro. El agua del riachuelo oscuro es gruesa y tiene un sabor a miel. De consumición él otorga una vida tan larga como la de los cielos y la tierra. Comer los cinco tipos de hongos sagrados también se traduce en una larga vida y no en muerte ".
